The regeneration of the Malta Maritime Museum
Future visitors to the Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu will enjoy a fully immersive and interactive experience, thanks to an ambitious regeneration programme currently underway.
The €15 million regeneration project is now in progress, following the successful completion of its first phase, which was supported by €2 million in funding from the EEA and Norway Grants.
The project includes the comprehensive restoration and redesign of the museum site along the Birgu waterfront. This transformation is complemented by a large-scale digitisation initiative covering both tangible and intangible elements of Malta’s maritime heritage. Together, these efforts will position the Malta Maritime Museum and Heritage Malta’s digital offerings as industry-leading examples of 21st-century museum practice.
The EEA and Norway Grants project consisted of two main components:
- Civil Works: Extensive rehabilitation and restoration of the existing building to ensure its structural integrity and suitability for a modern museum experience.
- Digitisation: The creation of a rich, accessible digital database containing information, knowledge, and media related to Malta’s maritime cultural heritage.
Once complete, the regenerated Malta Maritime Museum will stand as a flagship institution celebrating Malta’s enduring connection to the sea, offering visitors a state-of-the-art cultural, culinary and engaging visitor experience.
